KOTORI SPINS - OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 09

Gift of Gab
Escape 2 Mars
[Cornerstone]
The Blackalicious frontman drops his first solo effort in 5 years. As one of our favorite all time lyricists, it's hard to say anything negative about 'Escape 2 Mars.' A solid funkified real album about real life about real things. Rare...bold...mad effective. "Dreamin" is my joint!
The Squirrel Nut Zippers
Lost At Sea
[Southern Broadcasting/MRI]
Although most of it is old material, it's still fun. and considering it's been 9 years since we've even heard anything from 'em, it'll all sound new, yet pleasantly familiar, anyway. Oh, and it's their first live album...ladies and gentlemen, from the kings of swing-hop, The Squirrel Nut Zippers.
Brother Ali
Us
[Rhymesayers}
It is very hard to say anything but…"Wow!" He's still got that crazy pissed off madman delivery, but for some reason, it all comes off curiously warm and affectionate. Perhaps it's the material? Or maybe it's the curiosity drummed up by an albino Muslim midwestern rapper. Once again enlisting the production prowess of Atmosphere's Ant, Brother Ali presents "Us" with another step up from his already classic breakout album, 2007's "The Undisputed Truth."
Teenage Bottlerocket
They Came From The Shadows
[Fat Wreck Chords]
Twin-brother-Ramones-inspired-Wyoming-punks-on-a-mission-to-douse-emo-with-a-dirty-ether-soaked-sock? Yes. We likes. Young, full of energy, rebellious, responsibility-free. Rat bastards.
The Little Heroes
Thank You
[Wednesday Records]
It's a quaint n' cute lil' thing. Wouldn't normally keep a sucker like this in our CD player, but every time we tried to get up to turn it off, we just couldn't bring ourselves to do it. Eventually…well…we liked it. They like to call it indie-pop, but the smooth droning melodies, structure, sequencing, production, and presentation prove otherwise…this is actually…quite listenable. And, dare we say it…enjoyable. Hey thanks guys.
All Leather
Hung Like A Horse
[Dim Mak Records]
When you get sick and tired of the same old shit different name that starts with 'The,' there's no remedy better than shit like this…weird noise tweak sound undiscovered frequency messy perfection jagged smoothity. The Locust did it to us about 3 years ago, and now The Locust's Justin Pearson's smacks us across the derrier with All Leather. Ooh…kinky.
King Cannibal
Let The Night Roar
[Ninja Tune]
Fuck, I don't know where the shit this one falls into…everything from drum and bass to dancehall to trance to breakbeats to industrial electronica all in one…11 times in over an hour. Whatever it is, it's hard and it's dark, but it's fuckin' bangin' so break me off some! Uh huh. Yeah. drrrrrrrOP!
Larry McDonald
Drumquestra
[MCPR]
